If you read part 1, you'll know that I started my first balcony garden with a $50 budget. I stuck to that budget and we were able to grow many foods on that balcony. Now, I always say that starting a garden can be very easy and I want to show you how. I am going to share several budget amounts and what you can possibly purchase in each budget range.
- I only have $5 to start a garden.
With $5, I suggest visiting your local dollar store to buy one flower pot, one bag of potting soil and one package of seeds. You may only be able to grow one thing, but you now have a garden.
- I only have $10 to start a garden.
With $10, I suggest visiting your local dollar store to buy two flowerpots or a one large grow bag, two bags of potting soil and two packages of seeds.
- I only have $50 - $100 to start a garden.
With this amount of money, you can visit your local dollar store, Walmart or local garden center. You will be able to purchase three or four flower pots, wood for a small raised bed or two grow bags, with this budget. Today, seeds cost about $1.99 and started plants cost about $4.89 where I live. I suggest purchasing one large plant, such as a tomato, eggplant or cucumber and purchase the rest in seeds. Purchase three or four bags of potting soil and start your garden.
- I only have $500 - $1000 to start a garden.
With a budget this size, your options begin to expand. While visiting your local garden center, you'll be able to buy several bags of soil or 1 big load of soil, along with compost and mulch. You can invest in quality wood, such as cedar, large grow bags, or metal plant containers. On Amazon, there are several bulk seed kits you can purchase to start your garden. Depending on how the garden is designed, pavestones can be a great addition to create walkways in your garden.
Just think about if your budget is beyond $1000 and all of the magic that you can make happen in your garden with that kind of budget.
I have spent over $1000 in my garden, but it happened over time. But gardening is not about the money spent, no matter what the economy looks like, it's about enjoying the harvest and the time spent gardening with family.
